How to Update Contacts Properties on the basis of Poptin Activity
Poptin automations allow you to automatically update contact properties, tags, or segments based on a contact's activity within Poptin or on your website. Once configured, contacts who perform specific actions such as submitting a popup, visiting a page, or meeting predefined conditions will automatically enter the automation flow and have their contact information updated accordingly.
This guide will walk you through how to create an automation from scratch to update contacts based on Poptin or website activity.
- From your Poptin dashboard, go to the left sidebar and click on Automations under the Email section and Click on "Start From Scratch"

- Click Start From Scratch in the top right corner of the page. Enter a name for your automation in the dialog box and click on Create Automation to open the automation canvas.

- Once you're on the automation canvas, click on the Trigger block at the top to open the Select The Trigger panel.
To update contact properties based on Poptin activity, navigate to the Poptin Activity tab and select the Converted on Poptin trigger. This trigger will automatically add contacts to the automation flow whenever they convert on a specific Poptin, making it ideal for updating contact properties, assigning tags, segmenting contacts, or triggering follow-up actions based on popup submissions.

After selecting the trigger, choose the specific Poptin you want to track and continue building your automation flow.
Here, you can configure the conditions that determine when contacts will enter the automation flow.
- Which Poptin should trigger this flow? – Select the specific Poptin that will trigger the automation whenever a contact converts on it. Only contacts who submit the selected Poptin will be eligible to enter the flow.
- Subscriber Filter – Define which contacts should enter the automation. You can choose All Subscribers or apply additional filters to target specific contacts based on your requirements.
- Re-trigger the flow for contacts that have been in this flow before – Decide whether contacts can enter the automation multiple times. You can choose options such as Never (recommended for one-time updates) or allow re-entry based on your use case.
Once configured, any contact who converts on the selected Poptin and matches the specified filter criteria will automatically enter the automation and proceed through the configured workflow.

- With your trigger set, click the + button below the trigger node to start adding steps to your flow.
In this step, select the Operation action to update a contact’s properties, tags, or subscription status. This action allows you to automatically update your contacts in the automation flow based on their activity in a Poptin popup.
For example, you can use this to tag contacts, update custom fields, or adjust subscription settings right after they convert on a popup, ensuring your contact data stays accurate and actionable.

- Next, choose the operation you want to perform when a contact reaches this step in the automation.
Poptin provides three operation types:
- Update Contact’s Properties – Update existing contact information such as first name, last name, email address, phone number, or any custom contact property. This is useful for enriching contact profiles based on their popup interactions.
- Tag/Untag Contact – Automatically add or remove tags to organize and segment contacts based on their behavior, interests, source, or actions. Tags can later be used for filtering, targeting, and personalization.
- Subscribe/Unsubscribe – Change the subscription status of a contact. You can automatically mark contacts as Subscribed, Unsubscribed, or Unconfirmed based on the conditions defined in your automation.

For updating contact properties based on a Poptin conversion, click Select under Update Contact’s Properties and configure the property values you would like to update.
- In this step, you define the contact properties that should be updated when the trigger is activated.
- Property: Select the field from your contact list that you want to update, e.g., First Name, Last Name, or any custom field that exists for your contacts.
- Value: Map this to the corresponding field from your Poptin popup, so the value submitted in the popup automatically updates the contact property.

Once you’ve finished configuring your Update Contact Properties automation based on Poptin activity, you need to activate the automation so that it starts updating contacts automatically whenever they convert on the selected popup.
To do this:
- Toggle the automation switch to ON.
- A confirmation popup will appear asking: “Turn on this automation?”
- Click “Save and Turn On” to activate the workflow.

Once enabled, the automation will automatically run for all contacts who meet the trigger conditions (in this case, contacts who convert on the selected Poptin and match the configured filters). The specified contact properties will be updated automatically based on the values submitted through the popup.
Your automation for updating contact properties based on Poptin activity is now complete and successfully activated.
You will see the automation listed under the Automations section, along with performance metrics:
- Entered – Number of contacts who triggered the automation
- Completed – Contacts who completed the workflow
From this screen, you can also:
- Turn the automation ON/OFF at any time
- Edit the workflow or the contact property updates
- View an overview of the automation and performance statistics
- Track engagement and property updates in real time
Your Update Contact Properties on the basis of Poptin Activity automation is now active and will automatically update contact details for any contact who converts on the selected Poptin according to the rules you’ve configured.
